The city of Terrassa is making a firm commitment to sensing as a means to improve the quality of life of citizens, working on aspects such as sustainability, energy efficiency and the management of municipal resources through data collection and analysis. In this context, the project “Smart Building Terrassa: Buildings build the digital city” is being developed, which has been finalist in the Smart Buildings Category of the XI edition of the enerTIC Awards 2023.
Through a participative process, between 2018 and 2020, the people of Terrassa proposed ideas to improve life in the city by deploying smart sensors in buildings. Among all the proposals submitted, the City Council chose 13 use cases that will be implemented in 169 buildings and will generate new services in different areas: economy, mobility, environment, quality of life…
With other 7 national initiatives, the Terrassa project is the beneficiary of the “Intelligent Building Pilots” grant from Red.es, an entity that belongs to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. The tender budget reaches 2.5M €, half of which is financed with FEDER funds, and the other half by the City Council.
By the hand of d’IMESAPI
The contract to carry out the project in our city was won by the company IMESAPI, which will be responsible for providing all the necessary means, both hardware and software, to implement the use cases and convert the buildings into data sources that can be used to make decisions that affect the city in different areas.
In addition to installing the different sensors in buildings (which will collect the data from the systems they monitor), an IoT Node will be installed in each building. This device will be responsible of collecting the data received from the sensors, translating them into a common format, and publishing them on Sentilo, the City Council’s sensors and actuators platform.
The data, now standardized and centralized, will be used to feed a central platform. It is on this platform where all the necessary logic will run to process the data and generate the different views, which will allow us to provide the functionalities we want to achieve with the use cases.

For the citizens good
The 13 use cases that will be implemented allow to monitor, detect, manage, prevent and analyze the different parameters and applications that the project contemplates, focusing on improving the quality of life of citizens, the prevention of natural risks, the promotion of the environment and sustainability, the care and support of people and the management of municipal resources.
As newer systems, the project “Smart Building Terrassa: Buildings build the digital city” features automatic learning and recognition based on Artificial Intelligence, monitoring of the light intensity of the night sky, adapted public information points (PIPA), APP for the guidance of visually impaired people and detection of forest fires using cameras.
