The Project TEI or Terrassa Smart Energy presents a wide dimension in addition to the change of all the illumination of the city, but this one is the crucial point where the citizens will face a new challenge: a new city vision.

Many of you maybe wonder what’s behind this big project. Looking back, the Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy established, in 2008, the commitment to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases in cities by 20% in 2020. Faced with this challenge, the Terrassa City Council decided to take the first step and, back in 2015, the previous study of the project was started. Now, TEI is set to culminate after the change of more than 28,000 streetlights, the renewal of more than 9,000 interior light points and the installation of 13 photovoltaic power generation plants.

The change of the streetlamps started in March 2019 and it’s scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2020. If anyone wandered through the streets before the change, they could observe the huge diversity of different lampposts that, later, conditioned the kind of luminary to be installed: there were some low posts in the streets within the neighborhoods, some other higher lights located on large avenues or parks, some lamps with double arms at same or different heights and even ornamental lamps in some monuments. With this big diversity in the luminary park, models by 7 different manufacturers had to be used (Carandini, iGuzzini, Lamp, Novatilu, Philips, Schroeder, and Disano). Moreover, about thirty different models (Axia, Voldue, Sline, Rline…) of luminaries have been installed. Would you be able to find all the models?

One question that may arise is Why have these manufacturers and models been chosen? The answer is very simple. Like any person would do, we looked for information about the manufacturers, market share, business data, opinions… and we concluded that these manufacturers were the most important and they could offer the versatility and quality that our city needed. As for the used luminary models, they are, for sure, the ones that best fit the original model that was chosen at the time according to the characteristics of every street.

The advantages of the implementation of LED technology lights are:

  1. Energy saving
  2. Economic cost reduction
  3. Modernization of the lighting control system
  4. CO2 emission reduction
  5. Lighting facades projects of municipal buildings and monuments
  6. Improvement of the color rendering index (CRI), which allows us a better perception of objects and colors.
