The international award has valued the company’s initiative to replace single-use surgical textile material.

The healthcare services and support company Axioma Solucions, linked to Mútua de Terrassa, has been selected as a finalist for the second consecutive year in the European Award for Waste Reduction, with an initiative framed within the Green Commitment that advocates for the replacement of single-use surgical textile material in favour of reusable material.

Ignasi Canal, director of Axioma Solucions, has expressed in a press release from the entity that he is “proud” of the tireless work to innovate with reusable textile products. This edition was held on June 1st 2023 in Dublin.

Axioma’s project was called “Dressing the operating rooms with zero waste and fewer emissions” and was selected from a total of 58 nominations. The initiative made it possible to replace single-use surgical textile material with reusable material, guaranteeing sterility and traceability requirements, at five hospitals: Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital, Vall d’Hebron University Hospital, Bellvitge University Hospital, Mollet Hospital and Mútua de Terrassa University Hospital.

The Axioma project made it possible to save more than 10,000 kilograms of sanitary waste.

The initiative, which was implemented during the European Waste Reduction Week 2022, led to the saving of 10,226 kilograms of medical waste. The reusable material that allowed this reduction to be achieved were sterile surgical gowns, surgical pajamas, protective gowns and surgical drapes.
