The city of Terrassa has received the gold award in the European Capitals for Inclusion and Diversity 2023 in the category of local authorities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, in a ceremony that took place on April 27 in Brussels. the In particular, Terrassa has been ahead of the Brussels-Capital region and the city of Helsinki, which have taken home the silver and bronze awards respectively.
Specifically, the jury of the awards, organized by the European Commission, has distinguished Terrassa “for its initiatives and policies around diversity”. In its candidacy, the Terrassa City Council set out the strategy it has created to work on diversity and inclusion, called “Intersectional Equality”. It is based on incorporating intersectionality in each axis of discrimination, so that the specificity of each type of discrimination is not lost. To do this, the city has 7 equality services with 51 professionals who seek to address the axes of discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, origin, religious diversity, disability and age. The implementation of this strategy has allowed diversity services to serve 3,215 people in 2022 and discrimination services to serve 722 people.
The International Relations Service has supported the other municipal services that created the Intersectional Equality strategy, in the city’s candidacy for the European award. The Deputy Mayor of Territory and Sustainability, Lluïsa Melgares, along with the representation of the services that authored the award-winning strategy, and accompanied by the head of the Office for European and International Relations, traveled to Brussels on April 27 to collect the award.
